Ameland, 5 September 2019

After an absence of fifteen years, XTERRA returns to the Netherlands. The worldwide crosstriathlon circuit will land on Ameland next week. The 18th edition of the Cross Triathlon Ameland will be held there on the weekend of 14 and 15 September. On Saturday the competition is for Pro-Elite athletes and amateur age group athletes on the long distance (1500-37-10) and for the athletes who opt for the short distance (Sprint). On Sunday the competition for juniors – 8 to 15 years, wil be held under the name XTERRA NETHERLANDS JUNIOR.

XTERRA NETHERLANDS is the last competition of the XTERRA EUROPEAN TOUR and also the final competition of the BENELUX CHALLENGE. Enough opportunities for athletes to compete for a “slot” to participate in the World Cup on Maui (Hawaii) in October.

About 1050 participants have registered for the event. Almost 20% of athletes come from abroad which can be called unique. Participants from 18 countries (20 nationalities) are represented. Even during the European Championships on Ameland in 2008 there were not that many nationalities present.

The Elite athletes competing for the honor and the great prize pool consists of a select but strong group of winners from various XTERRA competitions. You can find most of the athletes in the top 20 of the current tour standings. The starting list includes Rui Dolores (POR), Francois Carloni (FRA), Peter Lehman (GER), Filippo Rinaldi (IT), Yaray Luxem (BEL) and also winners in Belgium and Luxembourg, Geert Laurryssen (BEL), Doug Hall ( GBR) and Tomas Kubek (SVK).

For the Netherlands, starting with the Elite group are Joep Staps (Tilburg), Martijn Dekker (Hemiksem-Belgium), Patrick Dekkers (Nuland) and Jorik van Egdom (Veenendaal). Joep, Martijn and Jorik are former winners on Ameland and have the great advantage that they know the special cross conditions on Ameland well. Also special is the fact that in 2020 Jorik van Egdom set his sights on both taking part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo and the XTERRA World Cup in October next year on Maui (Hawaii).

The numbers 1 and 4 of the current European XTERRA standings for women, Helena Erbenova (CZE) and Anna Tomica (POL), are competing as well. Competition will come from Nicole Walters (GBR), Kate Bramley (AUS) and Linda van Vliet (Nijmegen).

Shortly after the Elite group, around 420 so-called age group athletes start in their age category and will compete ont only for the highest honor, but also for a ticket to participate in the World Cup.

The island of Ameland in the unique Wadden Sea Region is the beautiful backdrop for the adventurous battle with the islander elements during XTERRA NETHERLANDS. The cross circumstances are completely different for many foreign athletes than they are used to in the XTERRA circuit.

The wind, the weather and the influence on the subsoil of the beach in particular give unpredictable conditions for the race in September every year. Swimming in the often turbulent Wadden Sea, mountain biking through forests, dunes and over the treacherous beach and a closing cross-run with many natural obstacles and the unforgettable finish on the XTERRA stage make this race unique. A sportive challenge for all ages and all levels on ‘our most beautiful part of the country abroad’ in Unesco Wadden Sea World Heritage.

The cross-triathlon is an event that fully matches the character of the hospitable Wadden Island where (top) sport experience goes hand in hand with a beautiful nature experience. The organization and implementation of the event is largely supported by residents and enthusiasts of Ameland.

About this Press Release

The cross-triathlon has been organized annually since 2002 on the Wadden island of Ameland, until last year under the name Tri-Ambla (historical name: Ambla). What started as a small-scale competition for and by local enthusiasts has grown into a professional event, which so far has had NK status and once the European Championship status. Despite the professional nature of the event, the competition still breathes the original atmosphere, where enjoying the fantastic nature is of paramount importance.

The organization of XTERRA NETHERLANDS is in the hands of Sporteiland and for the most part is driven by the enthusiasm of the local population, a large part of which works as a volunteer. In addition, the event has the support of important partners such as Province, Municipality, Tourist Office, Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten and the financial support of (local) sponsors.
