AMELAND, MONDAY – After an absence of fifteen years, XTERRA returns to the Netherlands. The worldwide crosstriathlon circuit lands next year on Ameland. The 18th edition of the Tri-Ambla will be held there during the weekend of 14 and 15 September. The race on Ameland continues with the name XTERRA NETHERLANDS, a triathlon with swimming in the Wadden Sea, cycling and walking on the beach, dunes and forest with arrival at the foot of the mill of Nes.

Organizer Casper van de Kamp from Sporteiland says that the event on the Wadden Sea is ready for a new impetus, which also puts the cross-country triathlon on Ameland on the international map. ,,In the past we already had the European championship once in a row. With XTERRA NETHERLANDS we hope to attract the fast-growing group of cross tri-athletes from Germany, Belgium and France.”

The first contacts about an XTERRA on Ameland date from last August when Casper van de Kamp visited the organizers of XTERRA Belgium. ,,Denis Detinne and Florian Baudoux of the XTERRA in Namur had plans for a second race in Luxembourg and wanted to get the Golden License with XTERRA with a Dutch partner, with which three competitions can be organized. We are now joining as Ameland and with the new race in Rosport, Luxembourg, the XTERRA BENELUX is a fact”.

In addition to slots, which can be earned for the annual World Cup on Maui, the prize money of Ameland also rises sharply. At the end of the 1,500 meter swimming, 35 kilometers of mountain biking and 12 kilometers of walking a prize pool of 7500 euros will be available.

Nicolas Lebrun from XTERRA EUROPE inspected the courses and other facilities on Ameland three weeks ago. Last Friday were the closing talks in Belgium and Van de Kamp got the green light. ,,With this, we are taking Tri-Ambla to an even higher level. XTERRA NETHERLANDS is a great achievement at the work of the organization and the efforts of many volunteers on the island. In addition, it will give a boost to cross-sport in the Netherlands. It is a two-year contract with an option from longer”.

In addition to the worldwide XTERRA circuit, a XTERRA BENELUX circuit will be created with the races on 8 June in Namur, on 1 September in Rosport and on 14 September the final on Ameland. ,,During every individual race spots for the World Cup on Maui can earned, but also the winners of the Benelux circuit can claim these spots. It will be possible to register at the same time for three matches with of course many advantages”.

The XTERRA European Tour consists of seventeen races, starting on April 7 in Cyprus ending September 14 on Ameland.

Between 2001 and 2004, XTERRA – now taken over from American hands by Chinese investors – was also held in the Netherlands. The Beach Challenge Kijkduin formed the backdrop for the commercial circuit of off-road triathlons and trail runs.

The planning is that registration for XTERRA Netherlands via the website xterra-netherlands.nl will be possible from 1 January 2019. XTERRA Belgium is open on 15 November and XTERRA Luxembourg from 1 December 2018. Mid-December 2018, the XTERRA Benelux platform will be ready.
